July 15th 1997 Its 20 years later and we still don’t know why Andrew Cunanan shot Gianni Versace outside his mansion that fateful morning. One of fashion’s immortal symbol of greatness with designs heavily influenced by ancient Greece and linking fashion to the music world it’s safe to say, as with John Lennon and Steve Jobs, there will never be another Gianni Versace. To transport yourself back to the 90s, hit play on this little gem of a George Micheal’s song, Freedom.
Lets start with a few names Gianni created into Super Models. Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Stephanie Seymour, Naomi Campbell, and Christy Turlington were all part of his runway and campaign posse. When I think of his designs I immediately think sex and silk animal prints. The name Versace is synonymous with hip-hop as it has been dropped in more hit rap songs than any other fashion brand by far.
Tupac and Biggie may have hated each other to the end but they both loved and rapped about wearing Versace. I can’t imagine there’s a XXXXL Versace shirt hanging on a rack somewhere – so I pictured Biggie, all of 6’3′ 340 pounds getting measured for a custom Versace silk shirt at the mansion. Actually now I recall reading in an interview that Biggie never really owned a Versace shirt because they didn’t make his size. On the other coast Tupac was wearing a Versace shirt the night he was shot to death in Vegas after the Mike Tyson fight.
Here are a few interesting things you probably didn’t know about Versace. Within 10 years of opening their first boutique in Milan, Versace was worth more than $800 million. While the black dress that Elizabeth Hurley wore in 1994 was voted the most iconic dress of all time in 2008, the green Versace dress that Jennifer Lopez wore in 2000 was voted the fifth most iconic dress of all time. The moment Linda, Cindy, Naomi, and Christy traipsed down Versace’s Fall 1991 catwalk to the strains of George Michael’s “Freedom! ’90,” history was made.
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story is currently in production and Penelope Cruz plays the lead role of Donatella. Ricky Martin is playing Versace’s longtime partner, Antonio D’Amico. Ricky Martin…Living La Vida Loca? Really? It’s only been 20 years, but his legacy will live on for eternity.
