It was a sweltering 90 degrees on a Thursday night and the Klickpicks team cabbed it down to the new Ludlow Studios off Grand Street on the out skirts of China Town. A stone throw from where in the mid 90s I played poker into the wee hours in the back of a lamp store controlled by a Vietnamese syndicate called the Pell Street Dragons. As we arrived to the opening event we were greeted by an elegant host and immediately walked us into a sea of hollywood hipster heavies, elite photographers and fashion models peppered throughout the white on white production space.
At approximately 3000 square feet and 15 foot ceilings the landscape felt like you were floating on air bouncing from one cloud to another. The cozy vibe was kept in smooth motion by the DJ spinnin classic rap joints, the bartenders cold chillin cans of budweiser and chicken cutlets charcoal grillin out on the sidewalk.
The owner Mr. Bjorn Brandt warned us it was a soft opening with the roofdeck and basement speakeasy to be ready to rock out in the next 2 to 3 weeks. The space has tremendous potential however the location might be a tough sell and a huge gamble. Perhaps they can partner up with the next generation Pell Street Dragons and roll the dice until the sun comes up.
